It's Your Right
“Surrounded as I am now by wonderful children and grandchildren, not a day goes by that I don’t think of Richard and our love, our right to marry, and how much it meant to me to have that freedom to marry the person precious to me, even if others thought he was the 'wrong kind of person' for me to arry. I believe all Americans, no matter their race, no matter their sex, no matter their sexual orientation, should have that same freedom to marry. Government has no business imposing some people’s religious beliefs over others. Especially if it denies people’s civil rights.”… Mildred Loving; - in reference to the 30th anniversary of a grand jury indictment charging her and her white husband with violating Virginia's ban on interracial marriages. On January 6, 1959, the Lovings pleaded guilty to the charge and were sentenced to one year in jail! The US Supreme Court overturned the sentence and law in Loving V. Virginia, 388 U.S. 1 (1967).
The Universal Life Church’s message of equality, belief in the need to protect the freedom of and from religion, and mission to do that which is right deserves to be heard by all.
Today, Gay and Lesbian couples face the same discrimination, bigotry, religious intolerance and or sectarianism. As we held in our Proclamation on Apr 12, 2007;… “we hold that it is a denial of religious rights by the United States government to restrain our ministers from their constitutional right to perform the ritual of the Sacrament of Marriage to consenting adults, regardless of sexual design”.

I feel that anyone has the right to love. It is a shame that man has taken such a beautiful statement and made it political. Hetero-sexual couples are failing at a staggering rate, so maybe they are threatened by the Gay and Lesbian community. All of the couples I know in that community are very committed and have been. Please keep fighting to change this law of the land.
I agree, John - how peculiar it seems to me that anyone could try to legislate love...
I don't agree, however, with your suggestion that hetero marriages are failing because 'they are threatened by the Gay and Lesbian community', that's pretty specious. I also don't find that 'all couples I know in that community are very committed...' - like any other joining of people, I find that partners of any orientation have their issues and their occasional relationship failures.
I think it's more likely that relationships fail because of a number of issues; sometimes because the partners grow in different directions (not necessarily a negative thing, although sad), sometimes because communication isn't clear enough, sometimes because of a lack of commitment, as well as many other reasons. I do make myself available to the couples I counsel on an ongoing basis, as those who are honestly trying to make a relationship work have realized that sometimes it does take more than two people working hard to be successful. The input from a caring counselor who does not have their own 'agenda' in the relationship can be very helpful.
But, to return to the original issue of 'rights' - I remain firmly committed to the belief that love sees no colour, gender, nor ability, and the government should have the same standards.
bright blessings,
Uppity Witch
